  1. Use the tool to compare the overall thermal suitability of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes under RCP 4.5 across time periods: 1971-2000, 2010-2039, and 2040-2069 (check the boxes for all three). Set the “Map Crop Risk” level to suitability in 9 out of 10 years. Zoom out on the resulting map as far as you can, and include a screenshot of your map as your answer to this question.
  2. Repeat part a, but for Chardonnay instead of Cabernet Sauvignon.
  3. Use the maps you created in parts a and b. Suppose you’re a wine grape grower in Southeastern Washington. During what time period might you consider switching from Chardonnay to growing Cabernet Sauvignon grapes?
  4. Click a few places on the map within the study region (the box outlined with the thin blue line), and review the graphs that pop up on the right under the heading “Location-specific suitability.” Which of the components (Cold Hardiness, Heat Accumulation, Chill Accumulation, Frost Damage) seems to be driving the differences in overall thermal suitability between the three different time periods?
  5. Instead of switching crops, wine growers can also alter their water use. Click on “Choose Analysis” in the upper left, and select “Irrigation” as your analysis. Zoom in just north of San Francisco and click on “Napa” on the map (when you click, your latitude and longitude should be near 38.3063 N, 122.2762 W). Under RCP4.5, by how much is irrigation demand expected to increase between 1971-2000 and 2040-2069? Provide an answer for Chardonnay and an answer for Cabernet Sauvignon.
  6. Based on what you observed in part e, will adapting through irrigation be costlier for growers of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes or of Chardonnay grapes?
