I’m studying and need help with a History question to help me learn.
1-Research a contemporary news item from a legitimate news source regarding any topic covered in this course. What is a legitimate news source/journalistic?
2-The topic of the news article must connect to any of the topics covered in this course: labor, civil rights, women’s issues, race, culture, sexuality, economics, gender, oppression, social construction, Americanization, Assimilation, technology, environment, movements, religion, etc.
3-You must also connect your topic to both the California https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codesTOCS…Constitution and the U.S. Constitution https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/constitutio… (cite part of each constitution in your paper and explain how it connects to the main points in your news article and the class source you choose.
- Apply historical knowledge of the past to understand contemporary issues, rights, and obligations as discriminating citizens under both the California and U.S. Constitutions.
4-Use any of the other sources I have provided in this course, readings, videos, or lecture.

***In summary: you will have 4 sources, A-your research news article (journalistic), B-a source used in this course, C-the California Constitution, and D-the U.S. Constitution.
12 Font, Times New Roman; Double Spaced paper (also make sure the spacing between paragraphs is double spaced like the paragraphs); indent paragraphs; Pagination at bottom center if paper is more than 1 page. (Possible 5-point deduction for incorrect formatting)
***If paper is single-spaced it will receive a zero, it will not be graded.
You will use the news item and at least 1 other source provided in this course, and apply some aspect of the U.S. Constitution and California Constitution (an example/excerpt from both must be in the essay and analyzed why it is relevant to the issue in your news article) and write a short essay, synthesizing the sources.
Intro (Should only be 3 sentences):
1-thesis sentence, 2-intro sentence of time, place, and setting, and brief background, 3-transition sentence; Absolutely no quotes in the introduction, quotes are evidence and belong in body paragraphs. If a quote is in the introduction will be considered a body paragraph and there will be a big deduction for no introduction.
Body Paragraph 1:
1-topic sentence (this is a mini thesis, based on your main point in your thesis), 2-discussion, synthesizing the ideas in the readings, 3-need to use a quote from your researched news article (1-2 lines only), 4-provide-5-7 sentences of analysis of the quote (See the video on analyzing evidence). You also need to include 1 example in the form of paraphrasing from a class source, and one of the following: the U.S. Constitution, or the California Constitution, and discuss how it relates to the idea(s) in the researched news article.
Body Paragraph 2:
1-topic sentence (this is a mini thesis, based on your main point in your thesis), 2-discussion, synthesizing the ideas in the readings, 3-need to use a quote from your researched news article (1-2 lines only), 4-provide-5-7 sentences of analysis of the quote (See the video on analyzing evidence). You also need to include 1 example in the form of the following: the U.S. Constitution, or the California Constitution, and discuss how it relates to the idea(s) in the researched news article. (Which ever you used in the first body paragraph you must use the other here).
Whatever you said in your intro (except for the transition), re-word in your conclusion; No quotes in conclusion. If there is a quote in the conclusion it will be considered a body paragraph and there will be a big deduction.
Cite all sources. Keep it simple. For the essay, use in-text citation at the end of a sentence, like this. (Author, title), (Tirado Lecture: Title), (U.S. Constitution and what article you quoted), (California Constitution and what article you quoted)
You must cite when you use a direct quote, when you paraphrase/summarize (use any idea from the reading in your own words). Failure to proof read and cite thoroughly may result in a zero.
No first or second person in your paper (-10 points is first or second person is used in paper).
Use any format – correctly! (APA, MLA, Chicago – whichever you are more comfortable with)
Word Count: at end of essay (WC: #) no grade without it!!!!
Word Doc or PDF only, submit as an attachment, do not copy and paste. MAC’s Pages and Google Docs are not a compatible formats. In general, if paper is submitted in a format I cannot open, paper will be considered not submitted, and you will receive a zero. The best bet is to follow my instructions and submit this assignment as a Word Doc or PDF only!
