Each team should do a retail chain, restaurant chain, professional sports group, non-profit group, and entertainer or program (any of these can be local, national, or international).

Some sort of spreadsheet is best for presenting the information. If you use Google spreadsheet be sure to set the permissions so it is a shareable link and anyone with the link can at least view it. If you use the a spreadsheet then the body of the report will be shorter. You will summarize the findings overall and tell which team members produced what results. It will also need to have a short analysis where you comment on the overall findings, noting similarities or differences in the organizations or platforms used. This report type would be less than 2-3 pages.

If you decide not to include a spreadsheet with the findings the report would present the same information with perhaps a table for part of it. This could be organized by platform or by organization. To present the details the body of this would likely need to 4-5 pages, depending on the tables and complexity of the observations. As with the format above, tell who did what work and discuss the findings.

think of the project in very professional terms when dealing with the organization and its

leaders and develop a comprehensive report for them that has a professional look and

provides meaningful advice the organization and its leaders may apply. Plan to present this

report to the organization’s leaders when it is completed.

Most of all, however, have fun with the assignment. It is a chance to learn a great deal while at

the same time greatly benefiting the Christian organization or ministry you choose

STEP 1 Select an Organization

Choose one of the following:

(1) a local church.

(2) a Christian missions or outreach organization of some type. This should be an actual

organization. Ideally, it is one that you are greatly interested in, perhaps have access to and in

which you can interact with its leaders, face-to-face and/or virtually. It should at least be one in

which you can go through a thorough fact-finding process that enables you to make specific

and meaningrul recommendations. Its size does not matter, although very large organizations

can be unwieldy for the purposes of this assignment or limit access to information and very

small organizations, particularly ones not involved much with digital media or social media and

other Internet-relatedmarketing now may not yield the best learning experience. In the case of

a very large organization, however, you might be able to focus on a particular branch of the

organization or department or ministry within it.

The organization you select should not be the same organization you will be working

with for your Google Ad Word campaign project.

STEP 2 Conduct Research or Fact Find

Although you can but are not obligated to conduct formal research that provides primary data,

find out as much as you can about the organization, its history, mission, goals, composition,

structure, forms of ministry, the various internal and external publics it typically serves or wants

to serve, the image it projects or desires to project, competitive and outside organizational

influences that may shape how it “markets, and perhaps key political, social, technological,

economic, religious and ethical “macro” trends that may influence what it is or is currently doing.

Some of this mav be learned through discussion with organization s leaders or other personnel.

However, a lot of it will be gained through your own examination of various strategic

communication plans, media/communication content, promotional materials, documents and

other materials the organization has produced All the types of information or factors listed above could have a bearing on the development of

your organization’s current or near future marketing or public relations strategies, as well as

what you might recommend to the organization in this regard. Keep the most important of

these in mind, but give special attention to the organization’s past and current marketing

efforts; that is, products/services/ministries and the way they have been developed, promoted,

distributed and priced or the perceived “costs” to those that might use them or have a stake in

them.

Research also can involve discovering what similar or other organizations have or have not

been doing relative to social media, Internet and other forms of marketing recently and how that

might apply to your selected organization’s needs.

In finding out about and assessing the church or mission or outreach organization’s marketing

efforts, identify all it has done or could do in this respect but concentrate most on its digital

media marketing efforts or how it is adapting to the current digital media environment in

this respect, as it develops, distributes, promotes and prices its products or services;

and markets the organization as a whole

For example, in what ways is it utilizing an organizational website(s), social networks, blogs,

mobile media, or any other digital media elements or applications of them for marketing

purposes and how well do this line up with trends, issues, ideas, and practices you have learned

or will learn about? What is the nature of not just the forms of communication used by the

organization but also the content associated with ow within each form? How do the forms of

media, their specific content, and the way they are being used line up with the organization’s

current characteristlcs, situation or needs and wat tney aopear to be irvina to accomplisn now

and in the near future?

In addition, determine how the organization seems to be communicating its story visually

through the Internet and social media platforms particularly, but perhaps in other ways

as well

Assess the Church or Mission/Outreach Organization’s Digital Media Marketing Needs

Based on your fact-finding effort, thoroughly assess the current and future marketing needs

of the local church or mission/outreach organization and especially those involving

social media and other Internet-related communication. Be as specific you can in your

evaluation. This should not be only a general assessment but should be an evaluation of how

the organization how well the organization is meeting current and projected marketing goals

and needs. You should be gaining insight about which of their marketing efforts you believe

should be discontinued or refined, and what initiatives might be pursued that are not already

taking place.

As part of this, evaluate what you believe the organization needs to do to better tell its story

visually through realistic, creative and meaningful use of social media platforms and

other Internet-related communication.

STEP 3 Develop Recommendations

Develop a list of realistic recommendations for the organization regarding how it can better

market its products/services/ministries through digital media. The number of recommendations

will vary depending on the organization, its resources and its needs. Be as specific and

thorough as you can. Very general, vague recommendations are seldom helpful to

organizational leaders. In addition, recommendations which the organization cannot realistically

undertake given its current situation or circumstances may not be helpful. However, you might

be able to provide some recommendations for the short-term but offer additional

recommendations for the near future, assuming the organization will grow.

Be sure to justify each of the recommendations, especially based on what you specifically

learned about the organization and its needs and considering current digital media marketing

trends and issues generally. In other words, the task is to sell what you recommend based on

the organization’s specific situation as well social media and Internet-related marketing,

advertising and public relations trends generally.

STEP 4 Create/write a Typewritten Report

Develop a typewritten report in which you present what you found and propose. The report

should be thorough but clear in writing, structure and appearance. It’s best to view this more as

a professional business report than an academic research paper, though it is important to cite

sources you may use.

The report should contain the following parts:

(a) a very brief introduction that states the purposes of your report, what you did in your

analysisof the organization and why.

(b) facts about the church or missions/outreach organization that you found and that you believe

are most pertinent to understanding its current “marketing environment” or factors that

influence or could influence any current or future marketing efforts it is involved in

(c) facts about its current marketing efforts per se, with special emphasis on its digital media

marketing efforts (especially those concerning the use of social media platforms and (d) your assessment of the organization’s specific digital media marketing needs and

explanation of why you believe each of these needs is important; including what you have

assessed are their “visual storytelling” needs.

(e) your list of specific digital media marketing recommendations you believe theorganization

should pursue, with some elaboration of how to go about EACH one and justification for

EACH (reasons why they are a good idea considering what you have found and assessed).

(f) a brief concluding section that summarizes things and “sells” what you propose overall. Again, it

is important to tailor this as specifically as possible to the particular organization’s

marketing situation and needs rather than providing just general advice.

STEP 5 Visual Storytelling Rationale

Develop a special section in which you summarize and explain how and why your

recommendations designed to help the organization tell its story visually through social media

platforms and other Internet-related communication will be an important way to address their

marketing needs. Use what you have learned from course readinas about the importance of

visual storytelling in today’s digital media marketing efforts to help develop and support your

specific contentions

STEP 6 Biblical Rationale

Once you have completed the above, develop a section of your report in which you evaluate

and justify what you have proposed from the standpoint of biblical truth. This should be a

biblically based rationale for further pursuing the marketing assessment and recommendations

you have provided in your report. Be thorough and specific in developing this. (Depending on

the organization or client, this section may or may not be suitable tor a report you present to

them. However, It should be submitted in the copy of the report you submit for the class.)

Length and Structure of the Report

The report itself should be thorough and detailed but not unwieldy. Again, structure it as a

report with clear headings rather than using an academic research paper or essay style. It can

be very concise, yet should be well thought out, specific, and logical. Endnotes (to cite sources

used in the research or to add additional information) seem to work best. You can include

graphics, images, charts, links, etc. if they help clarify or enhance what you have proposed or

help in visualizing your “story” (i.e., report) but try not to be gimmicky or just use them for the

sake of using them. However, it’s best not to expect these to “speak for themselves.” It’s your

voice as a “consultant” that needs to come through.

“Speak” to or address the organization and its leaders rather than to our class or a

general audience. Ideally, a copy of your report (when it’s in good shape) should be given to

the leaders or even accompany a face-to-face presentation to them. So, Its best to uSE

wording that addresses them and to provide a report that contains information that is pertinent

to them and the purposes of the project.

(Because our class likely will not be familiar with the organization, “cover” your report with a

brief- a page or less–description of the organization just to inform those in our class).

While the length of reports is likely to vary based on the organization selected and other

factors, 15-25 pages is a reasonable guideline for our purposes here.

Distributing Your Report

Your report should be posted as an attachment in a discussion “forum” within Blackboard that

will be set up for this purpose and so that others can read and respond to what you found and

1. One of the enduring values of great artworks is that they can be applied to contemporary events and issues. There is more to the “plague” than a horrible disease in Oran in the 1940s or even the Nazi occupation that was really Camus’s inspiration for his novel. It is also fully applicable to the current Covid 19 pandemic. This prompt is deliberately broad and even open-ended. Imagine that you have been thinking about how there are serious plagues in the world now in 2021 and that there are still reasons for the need for resistance, which was one of the major themes of that book.

You have lived through the pandemic for more than a year and a half. Throughout this time, many people, including political leaders, doctors, scientists, and ordinary people, have responded to the pandemic in often very different ways. Some of these ways have been admirable and some, arguably, have obviously not been admirable.

On October 6, 2021, for example, when Idaho Governor Brad Little left the state, his second-in- command, Lt. Governor Janice McGeachin, decided to issue an executive order banning vaccine mandates in Idaho. Her executive order also banned state officials from requiring passports for new and current state employees. She also banned coronavirus testing in schools and colleges in Idaho. (She had the legal authority to do this, although Governor Little vowed to reverse her order when he returned to the state; that reversal, however, is not relevant to this prompt).

Assume that you are a resident of Idaho. What exactly would you do when you learned of Lt. Governor McGeachin’s order? 2. Only a few feet away, two other students are engaging in a conversation:

Student 1: “Night and Fog” really got to me. The scenes of bodies and hair and everything else brought the Holocaust to life in way I had never really seen or even imagined previously. I learned about it in textbooks and all, but this was really different. So, I think we need to change our educational system drastically and immediately. We should require and prioritize Holocaust education at every level, every year from elementary school through high school. We need films like this and better prepared teachers. We need the remaining Holocaust survivors to come and talk to children and teenagers and extensive field trips to Holocaust museums here in LA and wherever else they are. This was a wake-up call!

Student 2: I agree that the film was shocking and you’re certainly right to be concerned. But look, these horrible events took place more than 75 years go. It’s really time to move on. While we certainly shouldn’t forget the Holocaust, we need to remember that we’re living in 2021. We have to prioritize the urgent problems that we face now. We have climate change and global warming. And the pandemic is still with us. Many countries have almost no vaccinations even now. World poverty and hunger rates are horrible. Sexual violence in America is seemingly at an epidemic level. So, let’s put our efforts on these problems and not dwell so much on the horrors of the past. I’m 21 years old and I want to live in a sustainable planet!

The extemporaneous speech MUST follow the organization of problem/cause/solution discussed in this module. Extemporaneous Speech Organization and Evidence. Focus on an attention getting introduction, not your name, or ‘hello’ or your name, then you give a thesis statement that says “Today I am here to persuade you that ______should __________” OR “Today I will argue that ___________should be ___________.” Do not open with the thesis or announcement of topic.

You will have a one sentence preview that briefly outlines the problem, cause and solution. Next, you will discuss the problem(s), the cause (s) and one or two solutions. You will summarize and conclude. You do not need to solve any of the problems 100%, so your solution (s) should be significant changes, but they may not be perfect, not much is,. The speech should be very close to 5 minutes. Four minutes is too short, and six minutes is too long. You will include a minimum of 4 quotations from 3 different sources, that are current (within the last 2 years) and are good quality sources.

Directions

Begin by choosing a topic from my list Extemporaneous topics.

Do a search using the topic and key words/adjectives for example if your topic was standardized testing, you could search that term but also standardized testing unfair. Read at least several articles from good quality sources that are within the last two years. Select a minimum of 3 articles that support your side of the topic and then choose a minimum of 4 quotations that support what you advocate for. This means you will cite one of sources twice. Although it can be helpful to read information on the other side of the topic (info that is against your thesis) DO NOT include it in your speech. You are not showing the pro’s and the con’s of the topic. I have purposely listed topics only, and you turn it into a thesis. Feel free to run the thesis by me but you do not have to. Remember the thesis will be : “Today I am here to persuade you that _____should _______” OR “Today I will argue that __________should __________.” We use this prompt for all 3 speeches because this clearly tells the audience what side you are on and what should be done to solve the problem. Nothing is more important than clarifying what you are speaking about!

Next, be sure to know what the current policy is (status quo) Sometimes this is law, sometimes a generally held belief by the majority. For example, if you choose to speak on the teenage death penalty you need to know if California has it. If we do, you may argue against it, but not for it, because it is already law and you would have no solution. Or, what is California law on affirmative action? You may want to narrow this topic down to college admissions–or hiring in the workplace but probably not both for a 5 minute speech. Whatever is current California law (the status quo) you would argue for change. Again, do not argue for the existing law, since we already have it, we would have no solution step. One more example-Gavin Newsom. He is the Governor. You can’t argue that he should be the Governor (status quo) but you can argue that he should be recalled. Do familiarize yourself with current policy/law on any topic you choose. Argue for change. Your solution addresses what that change should be specifically.

During the first portion of this class, we have spent considerable time reading about Ancient Greek rhetoric and Aristotle’s three modes of proof: ethos, pathos, and logos.

While these concepts are often paired with simple terms (ethos with credibility; pathos with emotion; logos with reason), in our discussions we’ve come to understand how these modes of proof operate on a more complex level in rhetorical appeals. In this short (2-3 page) paper, you will choose one of Aristotle’s three modes of proofs to focus on, offer your detailed interpretation of the concept, and perform a brief analysis of a text of your choice based on your interpretation.

Your paper must include:

A short (1-2 paragraphs) introduction

o Identify the mode of proof you’re discussing, the text you’ll analyze, and a thesis statement that provides a preview of the argument to come.

A review of the mode of proof you are discussing (1-1.5 pages). This section should consist of two parts.

o First, using Aristotle’s writing/the supplemental assigned reading that corresponds with your mode of proof, explain the concept.

o Second, in your own words, further explain the concept to give it deeper meaning. That is, how do you understand the complexity of the mode of proof you are focusing on? What resonates? What doesn’t? Taking creative risks is welcome here!

A cursory analysis of a text of your choice (1-2 pages).

o Pick some sort of rhetorical text – a speech; a newspaper; a clip from a movie; a song; a music video; a campaign ad; a commercial… the list goes on. How is the mode of proof operating here? (Think: The examples we watched in class).

In a recent assignment, it was overwhelming clear most of you think giving up privacy is fair trade for being able to take advantage of some of the “free” benefits of apps like facebook, twitter, etc… So I wanted to spend a little bit more time discussing this and privacy as we currently see it today.

In the past couple of years, TikTok and WeChat have also been in the news, facing a possible ban in the United States over privacy concerns. The current administration has argued that the ban is because of security concerns over a Chinese held company, which the Chinese Government could potentially have access to. Others have argued that American companies such as Facebook and Twitter collect the same data and could just as easily use it for nefarious purposes. Critics also argue that the Trump administration is banning TikTok because it has been used to organize BLM and other protests in recent months. Most protest organizers have also been recommending that participants put their phones on airplane mode during protests as well so that if police try to track you and prove you were there, they won’t be able to.

How to Create an Outline

To create an outline:

  3. List supporting ideas or arguments for each major point. Label them in capital letters (A, B, C, etc.).
  4. If applicable, continue to sub-divide each supporting idea until your outline is fully developed. Label them 1, 2, 3, etc., and then a, b, c, etc.

Assignment 2 continues your exploration into original newspaper coverage of U.S. history. The period this time is the Civil War years (1861–1865). Research Topic

For this assignment, I want you to find, read and analyze two original newspaper articles—one from the Union states (North) and one from the Confederate states (South)—covering the Battle of Bull Run, which is generally considered the first major battle of the Civil War. Search especially for newspaper coverage published during the battle or soon after the end of the battle (within days) that shows influences of the telegraph, either in news gathering, news writing or news distribution, and that includes visual representations (e.g., headlines and sub-headings, illustrations, graphics, maps, cartoons, etc.).

  1. Review the relevant sections in Lesson 2, the Lesson 2 forum, and Voices of the Nation, especially the section about the battle coverage, for historical context.
  2. Read the referenced New York Times articles (above and in the prompt for the Lesson 2 forum).
  3. Browse through other secondary sources available online for details about the battle, including the exact dates, but please don’t get overwhelmed by the material. That’s easy to do because there are so many resources available online about this time in U.S. history.
  4. Develop your research strategies. For example, consider the time frame, the geographic location of the newspapers, the types of keywords that might generate results, and other ways to focus your research. The more systemic your approach, the easier the actual research will be. I’ll be providing more search advice in my class announcement.

Step #2: Locate original newspaper coverage

There are lots of online databases that you could use to find original newspaper coverage. I’ve suggested some below.

  1. Click on E-Newspapers, Media, Maps & More on the UW Libraries’ home page. Browse through the holdings and click on E-Newspapers & News. Explore the various collections including some of the databases that you have already used (e.g., Early American Newspapers Series II and Chronicling America) and the holdings for African-American newspapers. Be sure to narrow your time frame and search with specific keywords. If your initial search isn’t successful, keep trying with different search terms. Experiment with general words and specific words.
  2. Feel free to search the online collections about the Civil War at the Library of Congress (there’s a link in Lesson 2) or other Civil War collections, but that isn’t necessary. You should be able to find everything that you need through the UW libraries.
  3. Remember that historical research requires patience, creativity and persistence. If you get stuck, however, just e-mail your instructor, or Jessica Albano, communication studies librarian at jalbano@uw.edu, or Theresa Mudrock, history librarian at mudrock@uw.edu at least 48 hours before the assignment is due.     • Do these articles reflect the characteristics of Civil War journalism as described in the textbook and Lesson 2?
    • Are the newspapers’ positions about the Civil War obvious in the articles and their placement in the newspaper?

THE ASSIGNMENT

The culminating assignment for this class is to craft a 5-8 page (1500-2400 total words, excluding titles and bibliography) critical analysis of a media-related object (primary source) of your choice.

For example, you might choose to write about a movie, TV show, song, video game, photograph, magazine, fandom, media company, technology, celebrity, genre, advertisement, or just about anything else that connects to media and popular culture. The only form of media that your professor prohibits are literary novels – save those for English class. Graphic novels and comics are acceptable.

The key is that your primary source is focused and manageable. Remember, you cannot possibly analyze “the media” in 5-8 pages. And even though Sharp says that topics should be general, that’s different than saying broad.

WHAT IS A CRITICAL ANALYSIS?

In Section 2.1, Sharp offers some guidelines for writing critical analyses; however, your professor would like to offer some additional context. It often helps to understand what a critical analysis is not in order to better understand what a critical analysis is.

A critical analysis is not a review. Reviews assume that readers possess no special knowledge about the object of the review. This form of writing often relies heavily on plot summary and the result is usually a judgment about the quality of the object under review (e.g., thumbs up/down, a star rating, or some rotten tomatoes). This is not say say that reviews are unimportant, but it is to say that they are typically not scholarly enough for a class like this.

A critical analysis is not a full-fledged theoretical essay. Theoretical essays are the province of professional academics (i.e. professors and graduate students). A theoretical essay requires a very deep dive into theoretical concepts and analytic methods. These essays suppose that the writers knows a great deal about the object of study, the histories surrounding those objects, and the academic theories and methods used to analyze media texts/objects/artifacts. The audience for theoretical essays are typically other academics.

A critical analysis falls somewhere between a review and a theoretical essay. Writers should assume that your readers are other media criticism students. In other words, assume that your audience possess some, but not deep, knowledge of analytic process and approaches to analysis. In our case, we have been practicing analyses involving shared experiences (i.e. we’ve all been analyzing the same things), but in this paper that assumption probably will not hold true so you’ll need to offer enough information to help your reader become familiar with your object but not so much summary that it displaces the analysis. In short, you’ll need to set up your analysis so your readers understand the important themes, concepts, historical contexts, cultural issues, and theoretical/methodological approaches on which you’ll rely. Your goal is to reveal subtleties, complexities, nuances, and/or interpretations of the object. In short, you want to deepen your readers’ understandings of the object. Adopting a clear theoretical/methodological foundation will help you frame that analysis, because theories provide lenses. Whereas a theoretical essay may attempt to extend or expand the readers understandings of theories/methods, a critical analysis merely uses existing theory/method as a tool.

USING THEORIES/METHODS

To analyze your primary source you should rely on RELEVANT concepts or theories explored in this class (i.e. from Takacs). You should also conduct additional research to expand your understanding of those concepts, theories, or your primary source. Remember, some of the key theoretical/methodological approaches that we have been introduced to are:

  • Historical
  • Author
  • Textual
  • Semiotic
  • Genre
  • Ideology/Discourse
  • Representation/Identity (Race, Gender, Sexuality, Class etc.)
  • Affect & Fan Studies
  • Medium
  • Globalization

Your professor recommends choosing one of these approaches or some combination of them for your paper. It’s wise to revisit Section 2.1 of the Sharp textbook for a step-by-step breakdown of what a critical analysis entails. Pay particular attention to Step #4:

Demonstrate how the primary sources take specific positions on an issue. This type of analysis, which is sometimes called ideological analysis, looks at how a source is in dialogue with the ideology of the society in which it was produced. Sometimes a source reinforces prevailing ideas about a particular issue and sometimes a source rejects dominant ways of thinking. Sometimes a source does a little bit of both. However, all sources take a position on the issues they evoke. Your analysis should make clear what position a particular primary source is taking and what conclusions it is leading the reader to accept. (Sharp, p. 11)

Take note of the way that Takacs developed our understanding of ideological analysis throughout the chapters of her book. This form of analysis often marries well with, or is incorporated into the various approaches mentioned above.

OPINION v. ANALYSIS

All critical analyses involve some opinion. Critical-cultural approaches tend to be more subjective than their more objective scientific counterparts. This does not mean that presenting unsupported opinions is a good idea. Just because your opinion may creep into your work does not mean that your opinion should be the focus of that work. Instead, a critic wants to demonstrate why the claims s/he makes a viable and justifiable.

Opinions are almost always written in first-person (i.e. using pronouns like I, me, and my). Analyses may use first-person at times but writers need to be careful about when and how that voice is used. Some methods, like autoethnography, centralize the writer and in these cases a heavier usage of first-person is anticipated and appropriate. Of this topic Timothy Corrigan (2010) writes, “When you write about the [media], personal feelings, expectations, and reactions may be the beginning of an intelligent critique, but they must be balanced with rigorous reflection on where those feelings and expectations and reactions come from and how they relate to more objective factors concerning the [object] in question: its place in film history, its cultural background, and its formal strategies” (p. 17).

THE PROCESS

To help launch the process revisit the work we’ve completed throughout the semester. Either choose something from the class that you’ve already worked to expand or choose something else as your primary source and analyze that.

Next, revisit the discussion board(s) that were most relevant to your approach. Read over all responses, but pay particular attention to your own responses and the feedback you received. Use that information to help you shape your analysis. You’ll also need to execute a full analysis (see Sharp’s sections) and weave everything together with transitions. As you do this consider how your introduction and body are leading toward a conclusion. Keep in mind that your introduction should be the last thing you revise.

Make sure that you internally cite any evidence you use and include the source in a bibliography. You may reference MLA style here (Links to an external site.).

You ARE required to undertake additional research. This research should involve a critical interrogation of your primary source, but it should also apply and develop your selected concepts, theories, and/or approaches. While business memos and emails may look similar at first, a memo has some key differences. Memos are usually more formal than emails and are often used when you need to give your message a more official look. They can also be printed and distributed wherever this message would have the most impact.

Background:

The purpose of this assignment is for you to demonstrate a greater sense of depth and knowledge on a particular communication research topic. In other words, given your previous Proposal Paper, this paper asks you to review additional literature (articles) that will ultimately guide your research. In addition, this paper requires you to explain in detail how you would hypothetically conduct your research study. This paper has multiple sections. Please read them carefully and follow the instructions closely. This is a 3500-6000 word paper (plus Title Page and References). Remember, your topic must be a Communication topic!

Instructions:

Your paper should have the following format:

1. Introduction (do not use a heading for this section)

Here you should remind the reader (that’s me) of your particular communication topic. Open with general comments about communication, cite past research, and then lead into your thesis statement. Your introduction should answer the question, “What is the gap in research?” Your introduction should also include a preview of the major points of your paper, and a transition to your next paragraph. The introduction sets the tone for the entire paper, so make it a good one. This section is at least 2 paragraphs and about 1-2 pages.

2. Theoretical Background (Center and use Theoretical Background as a heading)

First, devote 2-4 paragraphs identifying and defining the variables you want to study. Next, you need to ground these concepts with a theory. What communication theory(ies) helps to explain/understand your research? For example, if you are studying self-disclosure, then what theory(ies) explains self-disclosure? If you are studying persuasion in advertising, then what theory(ies) explains why advertisements are persuasive? This will be challenging, though your research should uncover the answer. This is a good place to use textbooks as sources. See me if you need help figuring out which theory(ies) to use. This section is at least 2 pages.

3. Literature Review (Center and use Literature Review as a heading)

Next, in this section the paragraphs will review and summarize journal articles that justify and demonstrate your research topic. You are trying to help the reader understand past research about your topic. For each article, you should summarize their results and make a connection to your study. In addition, you can also include the methodology of the article if it is relevant. Keep in mind, the articles you cite should be relevant to your study to lead me to your Rationale. Be sure to use transitions between each paragraph. This section is typically at least 3 pages and cites at least 5 articles.

4. Rationale (Center and use Rationale as a heading)

Here, you should first summarize the articles in your Literature Review. Do not just repeat the Literature Review. Instead, critically analyze the research; try to establish patterns, relationships, strengths, and weaknesses. Where is the “gap” in the research? How did these articles get you to your hypotheses? Finally, make a statement such as, “Given past research . . .” or “Given the literature reviewed in this paper, the researcher poses the following hypotheses:” Then, list your hypotheses (you can also have research questions, but must have hypotheses). For this paper, I expect very specific, measurable hypotheses. These should follow the format we practiced in class, see the Guide to Variables and Hypotheses. This section is 2-3 pages.

5. Methodology (center and use Methodology as a heading)

The next several sections are the methods or choices you would make if you were to actually conduct your study. Remember: This is hypothetical so write in the FUTURE TENSE. This entire section is at least 3 pages.

  • Research Design (use as a heading on the left margin) – in this section, you are arguing which particular research design is most logical for your study. In other words, would you use an experiment, survey, or content analysis design? You need to explain and justify, given your research problem and hypotheses, why you have chosen this particular research design. Also, address details about the research design; if it is an experiment, for example, then discuss the type of experimental design.
  • Participants (use as a heading on the left margin) – given the above research design, in this section you should explain who or what you would study. You should be as specific as possible on the population that would be involved in your research. Explain in detail how many participants or texts would be necessary, what your sampling frame is, how you would sample the population, and how you would ensure confidentiality for the participants. You can also discuss possible demographics of the participants. Remember, this is all hypothetical, though your research should be reasonable and doable.
  • Procedures (use as a heading on the left margin) – next, discuss the actual procedures of the research. In other words, what would the participants do as part of your study? For example, would the participants fill out a questionnaire, report to some room, watch a video, etc.? Explain very specifically and in detail how you would go about doing the research. Look at your articles for examples!
  • Measurement (use as a heading on the left margin) – it is best to organize this section by variable, a paragraph for each variable. In this section, you should determine how you would measure the variables. For example, if you are using a survey design, then what questions would you ask? If you were to measure self-disclosure, for example, then you would explain and justify how to do that. If this were an experimental design, then how would you manipulate variables? You can use some published measurement scale (you can find one), or you can create your own. If you use a published measurement scale, then be sure to list past alpha reliability levels and cite the original source of the scales. Either way, you should include a complete example of your measurement in an Appendix section of your paper.

6. Results (center and use as a heading)

This section is a bit unusual for this paper. While you are not actually conducting any research and you will not have any true results, I want you to tell me which statistical tests you would use to find your results and how these statistics work. For example, would you test for differences with a t-test or some other test? Would you test for relationships with a correlation? Tell me which statistic(s) you would use to determine your hypothetical results and why based on the hypotheses of your study. Section is 1-2 pages.

7. Discussion (center and use as a heading)

Here you should first remind the reader of the purpose of this paper. Then, explain the possible results of your hypothetical study, and how these results might contribute to the communication discipline. How would your hypotheses turn out? Next, address limitations of your study. Finally, end your paper with possible suggestions for future research and the need to do this research. Don’t forget the importance of a solid conclusion. This section is 2-4 pages.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Typed, double-spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 pt font, with Title and References pages.
  2. Submit your paper as a PDF. The formatting works better this way!
  3. The paper is 4000 words minimum (at least 14 pages).
  4. Include Appendices for example survey questions, measurements, and tables.
  5. Include a your paper’s word count on the title page.
  6. Minimum of 8 primary source references, though “A” papers will use more. Remember you must cite at least 8 COMM journal articles.

Obviously, this is not a typical assignment. I will not be grading it harshly. I am grading you on only four things:

Breadth

This includes how many different aspects of yourself you cover. Don’t just cover two or three different aspects of yourself. Cover 8 or 10. I want you to share about your family and your major, but I also want you to share what you do for fun, what kind of music you like, etc.

Depth

Depth includes how deeply you look inside yourself. You should share that you like going to the beach and hanging out with your friends, but you should also share more in depth information on a few topics. Talk about what you think and how you feel. Sharing difficult experiences or your deepest fears are good ways to get depth.

Writing Style

Writing style refers to grammar, spelling, etc. Since this isn’t a writing class, I am not assigning a lot of points to writing, but I do expect college level writing in this class. If you have only a couple of typos, you may still earn 5 points for writing. If you have several typos, spelling errors, or minor grammatical problems, you will earn 4 points. If you have errors with things like run on sentences or incomplete sentences, problems matching up singular and plural or past and present. you will earn 3 points. If I have trouble following your writing or figuring out what you mean, you will earn 2 points, etc.

Assignment 2 continues your exploration into original newspaper coverage of U.S. history. The period this time is the Civil War years (1861–1865). As Lesson 2 shows, new technologies (especially the telegraph) influenced how newspapers from the North and from the South covered the Civil War and its aftermath. Without a doubt, newspapers played important social roles during this tumultuous time, as illustrated in this essay from the New York Times’ long-running series chronicling the Civil War: Disunion: Scrapbooking the Civil War (Links to an external site.).

Research Topic

For this assignment, I want you to find, read and analyze two original newspaper articles—one from the Union states (North) and one from the Confederate states (South)—covering the Battle of Bull Run, which is generally considered the first major battle of the Civil War. Search especially for newspaper coverage published during the battle or soon after the end of the battle (within days) that shows influences of the telegraph, either in news gathering, news writing or news distribution, and that includes visual representations (e.g., headlines and sub-headings, illustrations, graphics, maps, cartoons, etc.).

Please read the following instructions carefully before you begin work and let me know if you have any questions.

Step #1: Prepare for Historical Research

  1. Review the relevant sections in Lesson 2, the Lesson 2 forum, and Voices of the Nation, especially the section about the battle coverage, for historical context.
  2. Read the referenced New York Times articles (above and in the prompt for the Lesson 2 forum).
  3. Browse through other secondary sources available online for details about the battle, including the exact dates, but please don’t get overwhelmed by the material. That’s easy to do because there are so many resources available online about this time in U.S. history.
  4. Develop your research strategies. For example, consider the time frame, the geographic location of the newspapers, the types of keywords that might generate results, and other ways to focus your research. The more systemic your approach, the easier the actual research will be. I’ll be providing more search advice in my class announcement.

Step #2: Locate original newspaper coverage

There are lots of online databases that you could use to find original newspaper coverage. I’ve suggested some below.

  1. Click on E-Newspapers, Media, Maps & More on the UW Libraries’ home page. Browse through the holdings and click on E-Newspapers & News. Explore the various collections including some of the databases that you have already used (e.g., Early American Newspapers Series II and Chronicling America) and the holdings for African-American newspapers. Be sure to narrow your time frame and search with specific keywords. If your initial search isn’t successful, keep trying with different search terms. Experiment with general words and specific words.
  2. Feel free to search the online collections about the Civil War at the Library of Congress (there’s a link in Lesson 2) or other Civil War collections, but that isn’t necessary. You should be able to find everything that you need through the UW libraries.
  3. Remember that historical research requires patience, creativity and persistence. If you get stuck, however, just e-mail your instructor, or Jessica Albano, communication studies librarian at jalbano@uw.edu, or Theresa Mudrock, history librarian at mudrock@uw.edu at least 48 hours before the assignment is due. We’d be happy to help guide your research.

Step #3: Report Your Findings and Submit Your Assignment
