Communication Interact Hence

Assignment Description/Overview: In a 3-5 minute LIVE presentation you will 1) give a summary of one research article you selected from a peer reviewed journal, 2) explain the hypotheses and the findings from the research study described in the article, and 3) apply the new information you learned to improve a communication challenge in a real interpersonal relationship. Please see the detailed steps to complete this assignment and the grading rubric on the next pages to achieve the grade you desire.

Follow these exact steps:1. Select ONE interpersonal relationship where you believe there are communication problems or issues. Make sure you follow these guidelines to make sure it’s interpersonal:

a. Do not choose a relationship where you are not a member (for example, the relationship between your parents, or the relationship between two other friends in a group to which you belong). You must be one of the people in the dyad you are analyzing.b. Do not choose a relationship dynamic between more than two people, since that would be a small group, not interpersonal(for example, you and your parents, instead of you and mom or you and dad).c. Do not pick a work relationship. While communication at work can be interpersonal, work relationships are rarely interpersonal relationships as defined in Chapter 1 of your textbook. The research on work relationships tends not to apply well to this assignment, so please pick a non-work relationship, and do not use a research article that examines communication at work.

2. Now that you are learning about communication as a social science, how would you diagnose or define the issues you have in this relationship? Find specific theories, concepts, or vocabulary terms in the textbook to describe the issue from a social science perspective. You may need to look ahead at chapters we have not yet read. Use the chapter topics and the table of contents to guide you. For example, my mother and I have poor communication because we pre-judge each other in a negative way. I would define this as an issue with perception, so I would read Chapter 6 to learn more about perception and communication. I would conclude that we suffer from the “horn effect” and also engage in the fundamental attribution error.

Now I would go find a research study on these topics using the next steps.Make sure the article you choose is from a journal listed in your textbook in Appendix A, and make sure it is full text, not just an abstract. Read the article, focusing on the Introduction and the Discussion sections.
