A book analysis is not a summary of the book. Instead, it provides an opportunity for students to reflect on the critical issues faced by individuals and families in the book. Grades are based on quality and thoughtfulness of response, evidence of reflective thinking, spelling and grammar, and adherence to the guidelines presented in this explanation. A complete grading rubric is on Canvas. Please adhere to the following guidelines as you prepare your book analysis:

Write an analysis relating the book to topics covered in this course. Your analysis should include very specific examples from course lectures, films, and text book readings (including in-text citations and references in APA). This summary should be 3-4 pages in length when in size 12 Times New Roman font with 1” margins and double spacing. Headings and bibliography do not count toward the page length.

Format of individual Book Analysis should be as follows:

  1. Introduction
  2. Institutional racism, or sexism, and unequal treatment by race, class, or gender
    1. Definitions, information about topic from course material, including references and specific examples
    2. Supporting examples from Mothering While Black or the Making of a Teenage Service Class
  3. How race, gender and class influence individuals throughout the lifespan
    1. Examples from class material on childhood, adolescence or adulthood (with references)
  4. How we can overcome racism/ sexism/ bias
    1. concrete examples and ideas (not generalizations)
  5. Conclusions
  • Book analysis should be organized with headings and subheadings
  • Book analysis should have correct spelling, grammar, and be proofread
  • Book analysis should include a complete bibliography or works cited in correct APA format
